If you've gone through a traumatic experience, you may be struggling with upsetting emotions, frightening memories dreams or flashbacks, or carry a sense of constant danger. Or you may feel numb and disconnected from life and those around you.
Trauma can take many forms and occur at any stage in our life. It may be the result of a one off incident, or it can be as a result of feeling overwhelmed by a lifetime of traumatic events.
Events and experiences that can trigger a strong fear and trauma response include violent assault, mugging, rape and sexual assault, verbal abuse and bullying, sexual abuse, traffic accidents, witnessing a sudden or violent death, surviving natural disasters, surviving near death or fearful experiences, terrorism, surgery or medical procedures, difficult labour and child birth.
Even being present and witnessing events such as these can create trauma and all the associated issues that it creates.
You may be carrying around the effects of early childhood trauma that for some reason are beginning to haunt and affect your life today.
Regardless of what created the trauma, one thing becomes very clear, it's that these events have changed or affected your life. But the good news is that core healing therapy can help you to heal and to set you free, even years after the traumatic event took place. Trauma is often described as an event or experience that threatens our physical survival or safety.
This traumatic event frightens or shocks us; it causes us to feel fear. This fear causes deep emotional pain, confusion and at times may have us doubting our very sanity. Suffering and dealing with the after effects of trauma are for many part of every day life.
If the traumatic events and the emotions it creates are not dealt with fully, the trauma can lead onto other difficulties creating flashbacks, memories and nightmares. It can affect our everyday lives as we avoid places and people that can remind us of what happened.
Unresolved trauma and the long term effects of bullying.
One common cause of unresolved is that of bullying. A study carried out by Warwick University found that bullying had long term negative consequences for a persons health and relationships, and that those who were bullied frequently were more likely to be depressed and have suicidal thoughts.
Lucie Russell, director of campaigns and media at Young Minds, said the research highlighted that the effects of bullying are not just temporary, and that "Bullying is traumatic and painful for every young person who experiences it and its long-term impact can lead to psychological damage for many years to come..."
Coping strategies may only work in the short term.
To help get through the bad days you may have developed ways of coping. Typically these are smoking, antidepressants or medication, OCD rituals, hair pulling, alcohol, drugs, gambling, food, shopping.
These distractions can and do help us get past the uncomfortable moment in the short term. But the difficulty in simply coping is that nothing has actually changed. We are in fact the same person carrying with us same anxiety, fears and associated problems.
The trouble is that every time we avoid dealing with the emotions through these coping strategies, it simply reinforces any feelings of weakness or hopelessness which can then further reduce our ability or will to deal with them.
It can become a vicious circle causing the emotional pressure to mount up over months and years which can take its toll on us physically and mentally. Often people that I work with have been carrying the effects of trauma for over half their life.
You may also have had sessions of CBT or counselling, and while they can be helpful for some people. They are very much thinking based, and so never really deal with the root emotions trapped deep inside.
Unresolved trauma is one of the most common reasons people seek help
Often the coping strategies that helped initially can become a curse as they can block recovery. The constant repressing or avoiding dealing with the emotions can create an ongoing emotional battle creating conflict elsewhere.
Unresolved trauma is often at the root of anxiety disorders such as:
Regardless of what created the trauma and it's after effects, one thing becomes very clear, it's that these events permanently change peoples lives. But the good news is that with the right help they can heal, and core healing therapy is an effective process to help you heal and move on from trauma even long after the traumatic event took place.
What are the physical and emotional symptoms of trauma?
- Intrusive thoughts
- Bad dreams & nightmares
- Panic attacks
- Memory loss
- Lack of motivation
- Feeling alienated and distant
- Feeling numb
- Insomnia or disturbed sleep
- Rage and anger
- Little or no concentration
- Lose confidence
All of these are normal reactions, and tell us that you have faced a threat that in some way was serious and overwhelming. The fact that these symptoms are sometimes uncontrollable and overwhelming are signs of an internal conflict as your body and mind are trying to come to terms with what happened and recover from it. So through core healing therapy we work with your mind and body to find balance and set you free.
How does core healing therapy help overcome trauma
You can't hide from your emotions. Well you can, but not forever, as when you do you're stopping your mind and body to work together.
Until you are consciously willing to work with these emotions instead of suppressing them, you are fragmented and moving further away from contentment. But by working with these emotions and resolving the trauma you become balanced emotionally.
The goal of therapy in the treatment of trauma is to help you break the link and release the emotions around the painful memories until they no longer cause disabling symptoms and at the same time you begin to move forward in life without needing the distractions such as alcohol, drugs etc.
In working to help release and heal you from your trauma I use a full range of modalities which include Hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, EFT, breathwork, myclonic shaking, NLP and mindfulness to help set a person free from the trauma they carry every day.
Feeling safety is the key
When working with trauma there are several pre-requisites that clients need. In no particular order they are safety, to feel accepted and not judged, to be able to talk openly and honestly and be listened to, and to have their feelings and emotions respected and listened to. In my office you will have all of these.
In our sessions you are in control. We work at your pace and speed and we always work with permission.
We are following a natural process. If you are already having flashbacks and nightmares, part of your mind wants to bring the experience into consciousness and make sense of it, and integrate it into your life so you can let it go and move on. Therefore my role is to help you do that.
Therefore a major goal of the process is to help you to integrate what has happened.
Together we will work to release you from the prison of these emotions such as Anger, Fear, Sadness, Guilt and Hurt. In releasing these emotions and the beliefs they create you can finally move on free from your past.
